The road holds the weight of my shadow

"The road holds the weight of my shadow is a result from a 2 day census I conducted into the abundance of bikes in Chippendale. On Day 1, I walked through the streets and recorded my location each time I spotted a bike and documented the number and type (personal, lime, delivery) on a piece of paper. I came back to the gallery and drew up the map of Chippendale, and marked the bikes’ location using coloured dots. Each colour represents a different bike -
blue = personal
green = lime
white = delivery
On the 2nd day, I hired a lime bike for the first time and rode around a part of Chippendale and recorded my route on Strava. My ride route is highlighted on the right hand side of the paper, encased by the dots of the bikes in that area.
I wanted to embrace a moment in our shared humanity. Embedded in our daily lives is the forgotten tradition of transport and Chippendale has a noticeable bike culture that links jobs, destinations and people."
Born 2003, Sydney, Australia
Surrounded by her Grandfather’s ink and watercolour paintings in her childhood home, Elle Guo could not help but be curious about when she could start creating artworks like his. Since 2003, she has lived and worked in Sydney, an environment that has led her to pursue a practice in animated and mixed media using various digital illustration software. Culture and the human experience has been a focal subject in her works, where she embraces moments of shared humanity within traditions, generations and affections. Her recent group animated work ‘Mid-Autumn Mooncakes’ (2023) showcased at the Sydney Opera House’s Playhouse, echoes these feelings through the collective celebration of the Mid-Autumn Festival, offering a glimpse into her cultural background.
